Featured Live Music Artist of the Week - THE LAUDS

Featured Live Music Artist of the Week - THE LAUDS

Live from Minnesota, Steger, and the world........ The Lauds!

I've seen this band play in a few different live settings, from a large concert-specific venue, to a private party (Rogerpalooza - or is it Rogapalooza?), to impromptu sessions at The Fest for Beatles Fans, to a Battle of the Bands. I have also seen almost every member play individually and/or with other musicians. And each one is able to seamlessly fit in with any group of musicians.

The band is a trio - lead/rhythm guitar, bass guitar, and drums, with the lead guitarist singing most (but not all) of the vocals, sharing some vocals with the drummer.

Musically, they cover music from the 50s through now and across a wide range of genres. It's fair to say they are influenced by The Beatles and Oasis - but - that does not mean they replicate either band, they actually have a sound quite their own. In terms of musicianship, each member is top notch on their instrument and are able to tackle some of the more tricky cover tunes with no problems. Effortless is a word that comes to mind while watching them on stage.

Another word that comes to mind is "engaging". Although, like most bands, there is a clear "frontman", each member of the band makes continual contact with the audience. At one of the shows, I recall someone standing near may saying "it feels like they are playing directly to me". I think that's fair to say - from the minute they get on stage, they are connecting with their audience. Each member doing/saying something that connects them to the audience. It's difficult to explain, but you can tell they are playing for the audience. Also, because they are well-versed across genres and decades, they also are able to read the audience and modify the set list to fit the mood of the moment.

Originally, a cover band, The Lauds is a band filled with musical creativity and have recorded a number of originals as well. Their backgrounds are the same - yet different - at the same time - with each band member bringing a unique perspective to the songwriting process. This results in a sound that distinctively belongs to The Lauds. As, I said earlier, they are influenced by The Beatles and Oasis, and this really shows with their harmonies. However, they don't sound like The Beatles or Oasis - they sounds like, well, The Lauds.

They haven't been out on the circuit recently, but here's hoping they return to live shows soon!

By the way - Happy Birthday to Lauds member, "Rog"!!
