Monday's Featured 5k of the Week : AshleyCan New Year New Cure 8K
That's right - an 8K is our featured 5k this week.
The AshleyCan Pediatric Cancer Foundation New Year New Cure 8k.
First, let's talk about the organization itself - the AshleyCan Pediatric Cancer Foundation - from their facebook page - "The AshleyCan Pediatric Cancer Foundation is dedicated to raising awareness for Pediatric Cancer, providing assistance to families of children with cancer, providing funding for research, and helping to ensure a future for the brave children fighting this disease." Money raised at these events is used exclusively to help prevent, research, and fight pediatric cancer with the money going to various other non-profits and hospitals directly associated to fighting this terrible disease, along with financial assistance to impacted families in need, and money used to help raise awareness of this awful disease.
Now on to the race itself. This an 8k - just under 5 miles. This particular event is held on NEW YEAR'S DAY. But, worry not, the event does not start until 1:00pm, so that gives you some time for some R&R after New Year's Eve....it also gives the sun some time to raise the temperatures a little bit as well. The event takes place exclusively on subdivision streets in the Bourbonnais subdivision of Briarcliff and does include some hills. A layout of the course can be found at runningmap.com - just enter "AshleyCan" in the Search box and select the 8k (4.97 mile) course. For those who have run the 5k course at this location - this course is quite different - right from the very start runners will travel a different path than the 5k. I've run in subdivisions before, and they are all different, but this one is a runner-friendly area - though cars may be on the road, they are extremely aware and cautious of the runners.
Online registration, which can be found on active.com and ends at midnight tonight (12/29/14). Race day registration is available beginning at 11:30am at the Bourbonnais Municipal Center - which is also the start/finish line general area.
Cabin 7 Promotions will be out there as registration volunteers and course monitors - hope to see you out there as well. What a great way to kick-start any New Year's Resolutions!!
