Featured Live Music Artist of the Week - Danny Donuts/Crabby Road
Danny Donuts - comedian, musician, artist, ice skater, Beatle Fan, great guy.
There are so many aspects to Danny Donuts that one feature would not be enough. He plays in a band called P-Bone & Donuts which plays Chicago Blues with a comedic twist. He plays in a band called Rainstorm Remedy which plays original folk songs as well as musical parodies. He is a professional comedian. But today, we focus on Crabby Road.
Crabby Road is a band, a concept, a musical creation, a definitive Danny Donuts work of musical comedic art.....simply put.
Danny and a cast of amazingly talented local musicians (local, meaning from Chicago to Vincennes, IN and places in between) sharing the stage for a fun-filled magical Christmas event. The band plays some well-known Christmas tunes, some Christmas parodies, and Danny's original Crabby Road medley.
This live experience is the definition of multi-media audience participation. The band is in costume, the band changes costumes. There is a slide show complete with custom lyrics and excerpts from classic Christmas movies and shows. There is even a sleigh - yep a sleigh! There are specific parts of the medley that call for specific actions from the audience including Rudolph noses and antlers - just to name a few. I really don't want to go into too many details, because as great as this number is - it's even better the first time you see it!!! My original plan was to post a photo as an example of what this live experience was all about, but while writing, I realized it's best to not give anything away - and let you experience it for the first time yourself.
The Crabby Road medley, if you haven't already guessed, is a medley of the entire Abbey Road album (by The Beatles) cleverly modified into a Danny Donuts original Christmas comedic parody. This medley spans the globe of possible jokes from the sublime to the cerebral to the downright slapstick. I really wanted to give a complete synopsis of this event in detail, but while writing this, I realized that would ruin it for the first time viewer - and well even for a 2nd and 3rd time viewer.
Because it was not spoiled for me - I will not spoil it for you.
However, I will STRONGLY recommend seeing Danny Donuts and the Crabby Road Experience at your first opportunity - it might be next Christmas, it might be sooner. But, if you hear about it, you must go see it.
Aside from the artistry and comedy of Crabby Road, Danny can not do this alone, on stage he had help from several known musicians from the local music scene, such as members of Meet The Beetles, Big D Unplugged, Yellow Submorons, P-Bone, and more. And trust me, you will see these, as well as the bands mentioned earlier, as featured Live Music Artists at some point in 2015.
To conclude, even if you have to wait until December to see Crabby Road, I recommend catching a Danny Donuts production at any time before then. His comedic cleverness and uniqueness make any live event just as fun and funny as Crabby Road.
Oh, one other VERY IMPORTANT item I completely forgot, the Crabby Road event helped raise money (and gloves) for The Night Ministry. If it is a Danny Donuts production, odds are there is a charity being helped - and THAT is magnificent!!!
Ladies and Gentlemen.............Danny Donuts!
