Featured Live Music Artist of the Week - Sean Colligan
Sean Colligan - originally from Chicagoland, now living the dream in Southern California.
I first saw Sean play guitar in high school, in a band called "Slayer" (no, not THE Slayer, I think these guys actually had the name before the now-famous metal band). They primarily played the hard rock hits of the day (and this will give away some ages, but here goes) - by the Scorpions, Van Halen, Ozzy, to name a few. It's been so long, I can't remember if it was a 4 or 5 piece - I think it was a 4. I do remember Sean played lead guitar. The band definitely rocked the shows they played, faithfully recreating the hits of our then-favorite rock stars. I recall Sean was able to successfully pull off licks by Randy Rhoads (as I recall, Randy was Sean's guitar hero back then), Angus Young, Eddie Van Halen, and many others. Sean had stage presence too, jumping and running all about the stage. The thing I remember the most was what happened during a show at the high school amphitheater when Sean jumped from the stage and then ran up the stairs of the seating area WHILE PLAYING. You see, back then, cordless guitars weren't really a "thing" yet. But, I remember he would stop at various spots and play right in front of the fans, close enough that you could watch his hands playing the riffs. Now, remember, this was a teenager, already with the confidence of a pro. And I said confidence, not cockiness. One thing Sean never was, was arrogant. Always humble when complimented and always willing to help others learn - and always ready to talk music!!! I haven't seen Sean in decades (literally) - but I'd be willing to bet, this has not changed. Still the humble musician who truly loves music - truly loves it - and still a friend to the fans.
After that, Sean went on to play in a Chicagoland Rock/Hair Band called "Barracuda". Barracuda was quite big on the Chicagoland club scene at the time, pretty much playing every weekend somewhere, and sometimes 2 or 3 times that weekend. They did get to play the legendary Thirsty Whale before it was severely flooded and eventually torn down. (RIP to the Whale!) During that time, they went on a multi-month tour of the US and parts of Canada starting on the West Coast and working their way back. This band was a 5-piece (I do recall that). Now, I know I said "hair band" - but back then, there was no negative connotation to that term - back then, that was what every band wanted to be! They released an album, of all originals, called "Open Fire" and the song penned by Sean Colligan, "Memory", even received some decent airtime on MTV (back when Music Television actually played MUSIC videos)!!! They also had a great power-ballad called "Superhero" penned by the lead vocalist that was getting lots of local radio time as well. Just like in Slayer, Sean was the lead-guitarist, but I do recall him switching to rhythm guitar on some songs. Everything I said about his stage presence above, still held true with Barracuda. The other thing I noticed, during his time with Barracuda was his connection with the audience. Some musicians sort of stare into the audience or over the audience - but Sean would actually make eye contact with different fans throughout the entire evening and even "jam" with them from the stage. Again, Sean's stage presence was there. But, on top of that, Sean was still that amazing musician, playing riffs that were unique and original - and rocking!! The band was doing quite well, and even had a few choreographed moves during selected songs. But, like many bands, something happened, and they became no more. By the way, Sean was still the down-to-earth music loving friendly dude. He saw me out in the audience one day - years after we were in high school together, and immediately after the first set, walked over and said "Hi" and we started talking like we just got off the bus the other day. He also talked to any other fan that stopped by. Amazing musician, great showmanship, and still down-to-earth! That would be the best way to describe Sean - oh yeah, throw in LOVES MUSIC.
Now, I haven't actually seen Sean play since then, but I've talked to him on the phone and heard his stuff over various social media sites. Of course, nothing has changed - he is still one of the most gifted guitarists I have ever heard play - I'd seriously list his name with Randy Rhoads, Zakk Wylde, Angus Young, and Jimmy Page. Yes - I SERIOUSLY WOULD - and not just because I knew him in high school (and grade school). He is SERIOUSLY that good!
Speaking of Jimmy Page, Sean spends time playing with the nationally renown Led Zepagain (obviously a Zep tribute band) - and of course, plays the lead guitar role. And, from what I've heard over YouTube - if you closed your eyes - you couldn't tell if it was Page or Colligan!!! And from the videos, he has the stage moves too!!!
He also released a solo CD called "Classic American Rock & Roll" - all original songs penned by Sean. Sean, naturally plays all guitars on the CD, but also sings lead and background vocals, plays bass, AND mandolin. The CD consists of 7 songs - including 2 kickass instrumentals ("Catalina" and "Lazy Daze"). Sean points out in various mini-bios that he grew up influenced by the Midwest Blues and Midwest Funk sounds - you can hear that influence on this solo CD - along with down home classic American rock! Sean has never been shy or ashamed of his love for rock & roll - and it comes through clearly in this solo effort! (it is also very evident when you see him play on stage, too!)
Basically, in short, if Led Zepagain happens to be in a town near you - or if you live the greater LA area - keep your eyes open for Sean Colligan. If you like good music, if you like great guitar, if you want to see a genuine musician - check him out!
