Featured Running Event of the Week - Frosty 5k
The Frosty 5k, complete with a visit from Frosty The Snowman himself (even though it was 34 degrees out). Yes, seriously, at the start line and near the finish line - Frosty was there to cheer on the runners - even at the risk of melting during a "heat wave" in beautiful downtown Burbank. (Burbank, Illinois, that is).
The Frosty 5k is an annual tradition in Chicago's South Side Suburb of Burbank. The race starts about a block away from the Park District offices/halls and finishes in the Park District parking lot - literally, in the lot.
The route is, as they say, flat and fast. I mean like super flat - if there was 5 feet of total elevation, I'd be surprised. The entire route is run on neighborhood streets with traffic control officers at the 2 major intersections as well as throughout the route. Course monitors are everywhere, and there is no possible way to get lost.
There are a couple of semi-long straightaways - but there are many turns and short blocks, keeping the run interesting as runners can focus on the next turn. Nice quiet neighborhood, with quite a few residents coming outside to cheer on the runners - even in the winter. And plenty of voluncheer people throughout the course, providing split times and motivation.
The event is run perfectly, with packet pickup during the week and race morning. The race is chip-timed and upon completion runners can get their individual results immediately. Results are also posted continually during the after-race party.
Speaking of the after-race party. Before and after the race, participants are invited to spend time indoors, in a small gymnasium/dance studio, with plenty of seating. The awards ceremony takes place here as well. But back to the after-race party - plenty of refreshments from bagels, to muffins, to donuts, to even mostaccioli, and other items. Plus Gatorade, water, and HOT CHOCOLATE. Plenty of food and plenty of pleasant volunteers to help serve the food.
A very well run, friendly, holiday-themed event.
